One Last Ride

TV's most underrated dramedy goes out on a high note.

Good morning, and welcome to The Sunday Stream, where you get the best streaming TV recs sent straight to your inbox every Sunday morning.

It’s August, which means it’s already time for pumpkin bullshit to start hitting the shelves. To take your mind off OOO season coming to a close soon, this week we have:

- A coming-of-age show that, well… comes of age.

Now let's get to it.

- Mike

Reservation Dogs (Season 3)

What It’s About:

This dramedy follows the exploits of four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma. After running away to California in Season 2, the third and final season finds them returning home to Okern.

Why You Should Watch:

As Reservation Dogs comes to a close, it will likely be remembered as another shining example of how much leeway creatives were allowed in this growth-at-all-costs-let’s-produce-anything era. I don’t know if another show so unique and focused on such a specific (and underserved) culture will ever get the room to run in the same way Reservation Dogs has. For three seasons, the creators have imbued it with such a palpable sense of place that sometimes, the show feels like you’re watching a hilarious documentary; other times, it feels like an arthouse indie film (episode two opens in the literal spirit world). Its tenderly funny and authentic depiction of the experiences of indigenous life is unlike anything else on the air, and despite being a critical favorite, the show remains one of TV’s most underrated/overlooked comedies. Catch it now as it takes its final bow.

Who’s In It, and Where You Probably Know Them From

The four stars of the show are relative newcomers, but there are a couple of faces in the wider cast you might recognize:

Zahn McClarnon - You might remember him from Longmire, Fargo, or the second season of Westworld.

Bobby Lee - This comedian’s been in everything, including Mad TV, Pineapple Express, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

Who Made It, and What Else Have They Done:

The series was co-created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the latter whom you might know as the increasingly prolific mind behind What We Do In The Shadows, Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnorak, and an alleged upcoming Star Wars trilogy.
