Guns of Brixton

A cops and robbers drama courtesy of the Brits.

Good morning, and welcome to The Sunday Stream, where you get the best streaming TV recs sent straight to your inbox every Sunday morning.

This week we have a crime drama from across the pond, so everyone in the northeast can watch something other than the biblical amount of rain coming down outside their window.

Now let's get to it.

The Gold

What It’s About:

Based on the biggest gold heist in British history, this flashy crime drama follows the cops who chased the vast network of thieves, money launderers, and shady rich people who tried to get away with it.

Why You Should Watch:

Do you ever wish that Guy Ritchie would direct an Aaron Sorkin movie? If those two ever did team up (a guy can dream), I imagine they would create something not far off from The Gold. Cheeky criminals try to pull off an elaborate money laundering operation to move the three tons of gold they accidentally stole, and as the cops pursue them, everyone and their mother gets the opportunity to deliver stare-out-the-window-monologues about class and the haves and have-nots in Britain. Sometimes, all that class warfare talk can feel heavy-handed (Joe Strummer and Mick Jones would love this show), but The Gold works because it knows how to put its foot on the gas and steer away from those speeches into stylish set pieces, snappy dialogue, and unexpectedly dry humor. The show’s thesis may be that you’ll die in the class you were born in, but when it comes to good TV, The Gold is in a class all its own.

Who’s In It, and Where You Probably Know Them From

Jack Lowden - Probably from Slow Horses (that other prestige British crime show) or Dunkirk.

Dominic Cooper - Mamma Mia, Preacher, The Duchess, or Howard Stark in the MCU.

Who Made It, and What Else Have They Done:

Neil Forsyth created the show and is mainly known for writing several hit British TV shows.
