Deluge of Dongs

How's that for clickbait?

Good morning, and welcome to The Sunday Stream, where you get the best TV recs sent straight to your inbox every Sunday morning.

To give you something to watch other than Barbenheimer, this week we have:

- A dick parade back from the dead.

Now let's get to it.

- Mike

Mynx (Season 2)

What It’s About:

This comedy follows an earnest young feminist in 1970s Los Angeles who joins forces with a porn mag king to create the first erotic magazine for women. Season 2 follows her journey as she grapples with her unbridled success.

Why You Should Watch:

Mynx returns for more ‘70s-sleaze-glamour, despite David Zaslav’s well-publicized efforts to kill it. We won’t spend too much time on that - most reviews of Season 2 turn into think pieces about how its abrupt cancellation and then revival is emblematic of our current transitory moment in media (if you’re interested, Allen Sepinwall did a great one for Rolling Stone). All you need to know is that the show’s still good. Mynx remains anchored by the platonic business partnership/friendship between Ophelia Lovibond’s Joyce, a Gloria Steinem-wannabe, and Jake Johnson’s all-around mensch/porn producer Doug (no smut king has ever been portrayed so kindly on film). The difference is that Season 2 finds the cast grappling with how to handle their newfound success. Joyce, catapulted into notoriety, struggles with the fear of it all being taken away and, as she does, experiences a ludicrous Forrest Gump-level of run-ins with famous ‘70s icons like Bob Evans, Gloria Setinem, Jackson Brown, and Linda Rondstadt. Meanwhile, Doug tries to find his place as a man at a magazine built for women, as does the queer photographer Ritchie (although for different reasons). Doug feels supplanted, while Ritchie fights for more of a gay voice at the women-targeted magazine he knows is also unknowingly catering to gay men. Oh, and there’s still a menagerie of man parts if that’s exciting for you.

Who’s In It, and Where You Probably Know Them From:

Jake Johnson - Most famously as Nick Miller on New Girl (favorite quote of the internet below), but also in movies like No Strings Attached, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Jurassic World, 21 Jump Street, Safety Not Guaranteed, Drinking Buddies, and Neighbors.

Ophelia Lovibond - Took me a second, but she’s the woman who leaves Ashton Kutcher for his dad in No Strings Attached, as well as that part in Guardians of the Galaxy where they introduce all the Infinity Stones. She was also in the long-running US version of Sherlock, Elementary.

Jessica Lowe - Most recently in Season 2 of The Righteous Gemstones, but you might also recognize her voice from Bob’s Burgers.

Michael Angarano - Young Will in Almost Famous, Sid in Lords of Dogtown, and who can forget Sky High?

Lennon Parham - Probably Veep, but also bit parts in comedies like Parks and Rec, How I Met Your Mother, Horrible Bosses 2, and Documentary Now!

Who Made It, and What Else Have They Done:

Mynx was created by Ellen Rapoport, who hasn’t done a ton outside of The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and Clifford the Big Red Dog (…?).
